The province of Las Palmas consists of the eastern part of the autonomous community of the Canary Islands. In 1927, the Canary Islands province was split into two provinces: Las Palmas and Santa Cruz de Tenerife. In 1982 both provinces became part of the newly established autonomous community of the Canary Islands. Las Palmas consists of the islands: Gran Canaria, Fuerteventura and Lanzarote, as well as another six small islands.
This province consists of the islands of Tenerife, La Gomera, El Hierro and La Palma.
Tenerife is home to the highest elevation in Spain and the third largest volcano in the world, Teide. Its capital city, Santa Cruz de Tenerife, is world famous for its carnival. It is the largest island in the archipelago.
Part of the province of Las Palmas, Fuerteventura is the fourth most populated island in the Canary Archipelago, and the oldest one, geologically speaking. The island's capital is Puerto del Rosario.
One of the most important tourist destinations in Spain, Gran Canaria has an important historical heritage and, its capital, Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, is the most populated city in the archipelago.
Part of the province of Las Palmas, Lanzarote is popularly known as "the island of volcanoes" and it is the third most populated island in the archipelago. Its capital city is Arrecife.
Part of the province of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, La Palma ranks fifth, in both extension and population, in the Autonomous Community of the Canary Islands. Its capital is the city of Santa Cruz de La Palma.
