The most famous cities are A Coruña (or La Coruña) and Santiago de Compostela, the destination of an important historical pilgrim route.
The province has an oceanic climate with warm and relatively dry summers and cool and very wet winters. The province's capital, Pontevedra. Other relevant municipalities, based on their populations, are Marín, Sanxenxo, Vilagarcía de Arousa, Redondela, Poio, Nigrán, Tui, and O Porriño.
Illa de Arousa is the only island municipality in Galicia. Part of the province of Pontevedra, it is made up of several islands, located inside the Arousa estuary. It connects with the continent via a bridge of almost 2 kilometres, one of the longest bridges in Spain.
